Transcripts for studying abroad

What are transcripts? Here is some information about it

An important document for your application to many foreign universities is transcripts. This is a certificate authenticating your completion of academics with details of your studies, subjects, and marks

It has a detailed record of all the subjects you have studied in the form of marks or grades given by the institution of study. The official transcript is always received in a sealed envelope stamped and is usually signed by the issuing authority. It is recommended that the student requests multiple copies of the same while applying.

 Details on the transcript

  • Full Name of the Student
  • Full Name of the Institute with its address and contact details
  • Board of Education
  • Name of Course and Qualification
  • Subject-wise Score in form of Marks or Grades for all semester

A transcript provides information on the academic record of a student, specifically the list of all the courses/subjects studied, grades received for each of those subjects during each attempt, the awards and achievements of the student and also the degrees granted to the student for the entire academic program.

In addition to the above, the transcript may also mention

  • The overall grade received by the student for the entire academic course/year
  • Number of students in the class
  • Percentile of the student either subject wise, semester wise or overall
  • Average grade of the class to specify where a particular student ranking.
  • Highest grades received in the class for the subject.

Authority granting transcripts:

Applications to receive transcripts should be given to the education department of your institute. You should mention the number of copies as well as in some cases if you want to receive the sealed copies or unsealed copies. For some universities, it may also be required that the college or the board directly send the sealed transcripts via post. Bear in mind that in some case it takes time to generate and receive the same.

Which transcripts are needed?

You always need the transcripts of the latest course of study. For instance, if you are applying for a Graduate Course, you need the transcripts for your Undergraduate Studies. Those applying for an Undergraduate Course would need the transcripts of their Secondary School Education or Pre-University Education.

In case you have completed masters in India and plan to complete second masters abroad, then you will need academic transcripts of both your graduation degree and master’s degree.
