Commerce as a career stream

A popular option among many, Commerce is the among the oldest occupations in history and helps our world be organized

Introduction:

Commerce studies involve understanding how the economy, money and business world interact and function. Very different from science which focuses on innovation and scientific theories, commerce studies focus on rules, regulations, and methods of data collection, analysis, and investments.

In commerce, you study how business is developed. For example, you study how banking, transportation, warehousing, and communication, etc., help build business houses.

In accounting, you study how financial transaction is recorded in the books of an entity. For example, you study about journaling, ledger maintenance, Balance Sheet, Trial Balance, P&L preparations. Accountancy helps business owners make better decisions and future planning of business. Accountancy also helps investors to measure the performance of the company so they can invest money for best returns. A strong Balance sheet lets bankers finance the business to improve business activities and boost employment.

One of the most sought-after career direction after taking commerce as a carer stream is to become a chartered accountant. This profession embodies everything that has to do with commerce except the management part.

Entrance Exams:

Most of the popular career paths after commerce do not require entrance exams. There are entrance exams though for private universities and some professional courses like chartered accountancy (CPT). Other entrance exams include those that take up hotel management or law (CLAT). Admissions are generally done online and are based on either the 12th standard marks on the entrance exam score. A comprehensive career counseling session will help you plan better.

Career possibilities

  • Chartered Accountant
  • Business Studies (BMS/MBA)
  • Banking
  • Insurance
  • Stock Broking
  • Financial Analyst
  • Financial advisor
  • Accountant
  • Auditor
  • Hospitality

Some important points to note:

  • There is an option to drop maths in 12th and take up Secretarial practice as a subject
  • You can take up computer science after completing high school in commerce
  • We recommend focusing on the board exams first and then preparing for the entrance exams
  • For all technical courses having an average of 50 marks in your core subjects is mandatory. In this case, even clearing entrance exams will not make you eligible
  • Do not go by marks obtained in 10th standard for choosing commerce later. Most humanities and commerce colleges have similar or higher cut-offs than even science.
  • Not everyone who takes commerce becomes a chartered accountant. Kindly consult a career counselor to understand your strengths and weaknesses and select a course accordingly
