Engineering as a career option

Thousand of students if not lakhs study engineering across the world each day. Know more about it here

Introduction

Engineering is the application of science and maths to solve real-life problems. Engineers figure out how things work and find practical uses for scientific discoveries. Scientists and inventors often get the credit for innovations that advance the human condition, but it is engineers who are instrumental in making those innovations available to the world.

Engineers design, evaluate, develop, test, modify, install, inspect and maintain a wide variety of products and systems. They also recommend and specify materials and processes, supervise manufacturing and construction, conduct failure analysis, provide consulting services to industries and government on various technical aspects.

 Engineering Career

Here we discuss some popular engineering fields

Mechanical Engineering Career

Mechanical engineering involves design, construction, inspection and maintenance of machinery, equipment and components as well as control systems and instruments for monitoring their status, efficiency and performance. This includes vehicles, construction and farm machinery, industrial installations and a wide variety of tools and devices. It is a study of motion, energy, and force.

Electrical Engineering Career

Electrical engineering involves design, testing, manufacturing, construction, control, monitoring and inspection of electrical and electronic devices, machinery and systems. These systems vary in scale from microscopic circuits to national power generation and transmission systems.

Civil Engineering Career

Civil engineering involves design, construction, maintenance and inspection of large infrastructure projects such as highways, railroads, bridges, tunnels, dams, and airports. It has played a big role in the industrial revolution and is a key factor for infrastructure growth

Aerospace Engineering Career

Aerospace engineering involves design, manufacturing, and testing of aircraft and spacecraft as well as parts and components such as airframes, power plants, control and guidance systems, electrical and electronic systems, and communication and navigation systems.

Biomedical engineering

Biomedical engineering is the practice of designing systems, equipment, and devices for use in the practice of medicine. It also involves working closely with medical practitioners, including doctors, nurses, technicians, therapists, and researchers, to determine, understand and meet their requirements for systems, equipment, and devices.

Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineering is the practice of designing equipment, systems, and processes for refining raw materials and for mixing, compounding and processing chemicals to make valuable products. It has multiple applications in almost all industries including petroleum, pharmaceutical, and even construction.  Before selecting this field, be assured of your interests and aptitude towards chemistry as a subject since.

Computer engineering

Computer engineering is the practice of designing computer hardware components, computer systems, networks, and computer software. From operating system software, such as Windows and Linux, to individual computer programs, such as Photoshop and Microsoft Office, Software Engineers turn piles of hardware into fully functional computers. Hardware Engineers develop the hardware of computers, including the motherboards, graphics and audio cards and drives that are later programmed by Software Engineers.

Entrance exams in India

There are three main types of entrances conducted for admissions for Engineering degree in India. The first one is the very popular JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) conducted by IIT.

The second type of entrance exams are those conducted by respective states and are for all the engineering seats in that state which fall under the government-owned universities.

The third entrances are conducted by some private universities and colleges.

Study engineering abroad

One of the popular pathways taken and preferred by many students these days is to pursue the undergraduate engineering study abroad. This pathway is comparatively easier to undertake since the student can select the college and stream which he or she is interested in. There are various scholarships for studying engineering abroad and these help in managing the costs to a certain extent.

There are even some options for studying engineering in Germany for free.

Bear in mind that the student may be required to give an additional exam called SAT and or IELTS depending on the country and course. Please click here to read more about the SAT and IELTS.
