Canada Student Visa

Applying for a Canada study visa? Here’s more information about it.

The Canadian Government provides an opportunity for all Indian students to study in the country full-time however, you’ll first have to obtain a Canada study visa. The visa you need will depend on your age, the type of study you want to pursue, and how long you want to stay in Canada.

  3. Loan Sanction
  4. GIC process
  5. Medical examination
  6. Apply online
  7. Biometric submission
  8. Manually submit passport for printing

What is a study permit?

It is a permit or a document issued by the Citizen and Immigration (CIC) which allows you to study in Canada. If you hold a study permit, you must remain enrolled and make reasonable and timely progress towards completing your course.

Documents required 

Firstly, to apply for your study permit, you will need:

  • An acceptance letter from your education institution with a valid DLI number (Designated learning institute)
  • A valid passport
  • All educational and work experience related documents.
  • Prove that you have enough money to pay for your:
    • tuition fees
    • living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada, and
    • return transportation
  • Be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada (provide a police certificate)
  • Be in good health (complete a medical exam)

You may also be required to appear for a personal interview at the Canadian embassy or consulate.

Financial Documentation:

In addition, to provide evidence of being financially sound of taking care of your study, accommodation and living expenses you will have to furnish

  • Documentation of a student/education loan from a financial institution
  • Bank statements
  • A bank draft in convertible currency
  • Proof of payment of tuition and accommodation fees
  • A letter for the person or institution providing your funding
  • Proof of funding paid from within Canada if you have a scholarship or are enrolled in a Canadian-funded educational program

Student Direct Stream  

As an Indian student, you can get your study permit faster through the Student Direct Stream (SDS). It is a scheme run by the Canadian government whereby applicants from some countries have a faster way of processing visa.

P.S. We recommend that you apply via SDS as the process requires minimal documentation and is faster to process the application.

Applying for your visa online

To apply for your student visa application online you may visit the official website. You can apply for up to three months before your intended date of travel to Canada. Your application date is the date when your application fee is paid.

Study permit fee

As an applicant from outside Canada, you will have to pay CAD150 as your visa fee. In addition to this, as an Indian student, you will need to pay an additional fee of CAD 85 for biometric processing.

English language requirements

To gain your Canadian visa, you’ll have to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. This usually means passing a secure English language test to be able to prove your communication and correspondence skills.
